Easter and Passover frequently overlap, occurring on the same day or within the same week in approximately 30% of years over a century-long span. Since the year 2000, the two holidays have overlapped every year except for four specific instances: 2005, 2008, 2016, and 2024.

Despite their shared roots in springtime lunar calendars, they do not always align due to different calculation methods. While Passover is fixed to the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan (a full moon), Easter is calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox.

Key factors influencing their alignment include:

  • Calendar Systems: The Jewish calendar is a lunar-solar system that adds a leap month seven times every 19 years to keep Passover in the spring, whereas Western Easter follows the Gregorian calendar.

  • Frequency of Gaps: About 15% of the time, the holidays occur a month apart, often because Passover falls on the second full moon of the spring rather than the first.

  • Regional Differences: In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Easter is never celebrated on the same day as Passover; if the dates align, the Orthodox church moves Easter to the following Sunday.

As we know from this most recent celebration of Easter, that custom is not shared in the West. Easter and Passover can, and sometimes do, align in the West, but they never do in the East.

r/explainlikeimfive on Reddit: ELI5, Why are Easter and Passover not close to each other this year?
27 March 2024 -

My very vague understanding is that the two celebrations are related because the Last Supper was a Passover Seder. With that in mind how come Easter is occurring nearly a whole month before Passover this year?

Why is Easter always observed on a Sunday and not three days after the day of Passover?
It's a long story, but here's a detailed answer . Sunday is called the Lord's Day because Christ resurrected on a Sunday, it says the myrrh-bearing women went to the tomb on the first day of the week. In the beginning, the date of Pascha/Easter was flexible, and later became fixed according to the Nicene formula, developed at the first ecumenical council in the early 4th century. The formula states that the Resurrection is supposed to be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. This honors the Jewish origins of Passover, which is when the crucifixion and resurrection happened, without mandating an association, since Judaism uses a lunar ritual calendar. Also, Passover isn't just one day. More on reddit.com

ELI5, Why are Easter and Passover not close to each other this year?
Because Jews and Christians (classicly) dont use the same calendar. Passover is on the 15 of Nissan the first month of the Hebrew calender and easter is calculated to be on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the march equinox (march 21 first). To go a bit deeper the Hebrew calender has in most years just 354 days instead of the 365 days of the gregorian calendar, because they follow the moon cycle. But every two or three years an extra month is added to get back into rhythm with the sun year. So both dates are calculated based on the moon but since the length of the years differe Easter and Passover also differ. More on reddit.com

12 April 2025 - Easter won’t align this year with another related celebration: the Jewish Passover, the holy day for which Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Last Supper with his disciples before being arrested and crucified. Even here, there’s a point of contact: The eight-day Passover season begins this year on the evening of April 12th, but it ends on the evening of April 20.

3 March 2026 - This means Easter can occur as early as March 22 or as late as April 25 in the Western (Roman Catholic and Protestant) churches. Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar for their calculations, which often results in a later date—sometimes several weeks after Western Easter. r/AskAChristian on Reddit: Why is Easter always observed on a Sunday and not three days after the day of Passover?
29 April 2022 -

Seeing that the day of Jesus' resurrection was relative to his death (on Passover), then the Lord's Day should always reside on the third day after Passover. He didn't say he will resurrect on any specific day of the week. Since Passover can fall on any day of the week, so should the Lord's Day. Just as Christmas is observed every Dec 25th and can fall on any day of the week, this logic should also flow for Easter.

So where did this rationale come from? Shouldn't a day of memorial be based upon the month and day, and not based upon the day of the week?

If the resurrection happened on a Tuesday, do you think Christians will have worship every Tuesday or will they still choose Sunday?

I agree with this logic, and honestly I'm in the process of completely rethinking Passover as what was intended to be celebrated within the new covenant given through Christ. When He said "as often as you do this, do it in remembrance of Me," what did the disciples understand "this" as? Doesn't it mean the Passover meal they were having? So, "As often as you do [the Passover meal], do it in remembrance of Me [instead of the Exodus]."? It stands to reason in my mind that a better designation for Easter should either be 3 days after Passover or even just the whole Passover period itself. Because the entire point of it was to reveal the Passover lamb as a mere symbol for the Lamb of God. That being said, I'm not going to start preaching "We must celebrate Passover! We must change Easter!" with this perspective. As Paul said, how holidays and festivals are celebrated is an inconsequential matter. But I do think this view is defendable.
