In the original Scriptures "sati" means much more then remembering. Buddha gave for sati many simile: in AN 7.67 sati is compared to a gatekeeper barring dangerous intruders, also in SN 35.245. In MN 19 sati is like protective guardian. In SN 47.20 sati means total presence of attention. The original meaning of sati is much wider than to remember. In the Mahasatipatthana Sutta DN22 sati is compared to a working man on a lathe: when the turner makes a long turn he knows "I am making long turn". I am appreciating your videos very much. Thank you.

The actual name is Thomas William Rhys Davids. The AI system has spelt and pronounced his name incorrectly.

Ven. Nyanaponika's "bare attention" is very advanced stage of practise short before awakening, it is not meant for beginners. Perhaps Ven. Nyanaponika did not make it clear enough. Solid mastering of all the other members of the Path is the precondition.

Question? So what am I suppose to do when I meditate? No longer focus on the breath and observe transient thoughts arise and subside?

Mindfulness is certainly not the right translation of the actual word. But, as far as I can see, this video is a creation of someone who has not really experienced the state of meditativeness. To keep it short and simple, the word Samma-sati is precisely what J. krishnamurti calls Choiceless Awareness or what Osho calls Witnessing and they both imply non-judgmental Awareness. The Sanskrit/Pali word 'Sama' (of Samasati) means a state of Balance or Equilibrium when your mind is not choosing or judging or taking sides, and the word Sati, as mentioned in this video, means Remembering. So Samasati is Non-judgmental Remembering or Choiceless Awareness! Remembering is not the opposite of Awareness, Remembering is not a mental process of Recalling; it's an act of Re-Membering and you can't Re-member without being Aware here and now. Gurdjieff called it 'Self-Remembering' and mystics like Kabir and Nanak called it 'Surati', which also means Re-Membering, but the essential meaning is the same, Choiceless Awareness; non-judgmental Awareness Here and Now.
